Randy and I drove our oldest to college this past weekend. Our travels tooks us to Newark, Delaware and back in less than 58 hours. We drove the 26 hour round trip, unpacked and organized her, and dealt with the “saying goodbye”. When we arrived in Pittsburgh Saturday night, part way home, the perfect pairing was to share a bottle of 2005 B.R.Cohn Olive Hill Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon as we reviewed highlights of how we had gotten to this point. We were interrupted, not by a phone call from her, but a text. After “texting” for a bit, we enjoyed the rest of our wine, with a great deal of comfort that we are on to the next phase!

For all of the Bogle Phantom fans….the new vintage just arrived today! We are excited to share the winemaker’s notes with you!

The coveted Phantom, Bogle’s apparition of three unique varietals, combines lush berry and fierce spice into a wine of complex character. Vivid essence of black pepper, dark fruit and juniper haunts the nose, while brighter flavors of blackberries and blueberries glance off the palate. From the shadows, toasty cinnamon and nutmeg emerge, subtly embracing the deeply luscious and succulent fruit to create a full-bodied, ruby rich wine. Captured in 1, 2 and 3 year old American oak barrels, this wine showcases the best these distinct varietals have to offer.

Though the wine is remarkable now, age in the bottle will only integrate the three varietals more. Welcome the winery ghost into your home again with this latest vintage, and enjoy with full-flavored and hearty meals…before it vanishes again.

Last Friday evening was an emotional evening at Gibby’s Wine Den as all of the Mocktirtleneck fans swayed to their jazzy performance. Mom’s got tears in their eyes, grandma’s even stayed way past the final encore which was brought on by the waving of lighters and cell phones, and friends beamed with pride on the accomplishments of these fine musicians. In a rather melacolony note, the young men that started the ritual of Friday night performances at Gibby’s Wine Den, ended with the song they started with 4 years ago. As we say good bye, thank you, and good luck, we hold the door open for a “Reunion Tour” . If that comes to past I have a commitment for a stop at Gibby’s!

Welcome back James Schlicher tomorrow night as he entertains us while we sip on a few new favorites during our Twilight Tasting!
