Kids to College Pairing

Randy and I drove our oldest to college this past weekend. Our travels tooks us to Newark, Delaware and back in less than 58 hours.  We drove the 26 hour round trip, unpacked and organized her, and dealt with the “saying goodbye”. When we arrived in Pittsburgh Saturday night, part way home, the perfect pairing was to share a bottle of 2005 B.R.Cohn Olive Hill Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon as we reviewed highlights of how we had gotten to this point. We were interrupted, not by a phone call from her, but a text. After “texting” for a bit, we enjoyed the rest of our wine, with a great deal of comfort that we are on to the next phase!

In honor of the End of Summer:

According to legend, in 1948, socialite Margaret “Margarita” Sames , was entertaining a group at her cliffside hacienda in Acalpulco. She was searching for a way to cut the dust of the hot afternoon. She mixed tequila, Cointreau, and fresh lime juice. Her cocktail kept the party going for two weeks. In addition to a lot of fun, the margarita was born!

2007 Bogle Phantom

For all of the Bogle Phantom fans….the new vintage just arrived today! We are excited to share the winemaker’s notes with you!

The coveted Phantom, Bogle’s apparition of three unique varietals, combines lush berry and fierce spice into a wine of complex character. Vivid essence of black pepper, dark fruit and juniper haunts the nose, while brighter flavors of blackberries and blueberries glance off the palate. From the shadows, toasty cinnamon and nutmeg emerge, subtly embracing the deeply luscious and succulent fruit to create a full-bodied, ruby rich wine. Captured in 1, 2 and 3 year old American oak barrels, this wine showcases the best these distinct varietals have to offer.

Though the wine is remarkable now, age in the bottle will only integrate the three varietals more. Welcome the winery ghost into your home again with this latest vintage, and enjoy with full-flavored and hearty meals…before it vanishes again.

Petite Sirah 53% - Zinfandel 44% - Mourvèdre 3%

Farewell Performance

Last Friday evening was an emotional evening at Gibby’s Wine Den as all of the Mocktirtleneck fans swayed to their jazzy performance. Mom’s got tears in their eyes, grandma’s even stayed way past the final encore which was brought on by the waving of lighters and cell phones, and friends beamed with pride on the accomplishments of these fine musicians. In a rather melacolony note, the young men that started the ritual of Friday night performances at Gibby’s Wine Den, ended with the song they started with 4 years ago. As we say good bye, thank you, and good luck, we hold the door open for a “Reunion Tour” . If that comes to past I have a commitment for a stop at Gibby’s!

Welcome back James Schlicher tomorrow night as he entertains us while we sip on a few new favorites during our Twilight Tasting!

When wine makers Adam and Dianna Lee heard that famed wine critic Robert Parker was staying at a nearby hotel, they took their first wine and left it with the hotel concierge for Mr. Parker. Not only did he try it but he liked it so much he gave it a 90 pt rating in the Wine Advocate!

The name is a suprise!

The 2007 Chocolate Box GSM from Australia leads you think of it as a dessert wine, but don’t be fooled by the name. Wine Enthusiast awarded 88 points for this nearly equal parts Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro wine. It is an easygoing, creamy textured wine with lifted aromas of cherries and clove and juicy, peppery flavors that finish with just the barest touch of astringency.

This is not a box of chocolates!
